This is probably the world's easiest cake recipe, and it's good in an emergency because most of the ingredients are things you probably keep around the house. It's also kind of magical, because you put in the ingredients, pour hot water over it, and when it comes out of the oven it has somehow turned into a layer of cake with a delicious hot fudge sauce on the bottom. I have no idea how that happens, and it totally amazes me every time. This is an old recipe of my mom's, which is apparently also known as Charlie Cake, although we're not sure why that is. Who's Charlie? But whoever he is, he likes yummy cake.
1 c flour
3/4 c sugar
2 Tbsp cocoa
2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 c milk
2 Tbsp melted butter or margarine
1 c finely chopped nuts (optional)
1 c. packed brown sugar
1/4 c cocoa
1 3/4 c. hot water
Mix first 5 ingredients in bowl. blend in milk and butter. Stir in nuts, if desired. Pour into ungreased 9x9" pan. Stir together brown sugar and 1/4 cup cocoa. Sprinkle over batter. Pour hot water over all. Bake for 45 minutes @ 350 F.

My mum used to make something like that. We called it brownie pudding. I haven’t had it in years and will have to make some. Thanks

This looks delicious! I’m wondering if either shortening was left out of the ingredients list or if the shortening mentioned in the instructions refers to the ‘melted butter or margarine’ in the list? Just checking before I whip it up! Thanks!

Very good! I just made it and I am sharing it with my college-mates. My mom actually makes this same thing quite often. I wasn’t sure if it would be the same. It was from an old magazine that my grandmother clipped it out of years ago and they call it “Hot Fudge Sundae Cake.” There is also a version of this that is peanut butter instead of chocolate, also very good!

Applebee’s make the most decadent Hot Molten Chocolate cake—my daughter & husband order it all of the time. We made your recipe last night and were astounded that it tastes exactly like theirs! My daughter even requested it for breakfast this morning! Thanks for sharing!

This is my favorite desert of all-time. My grandmother has made this for me ever since I can remember. I love it hot or cold, with cool whip or not. Just delicous, and easy to make!

This was the exact recipe I had been looking for; my Mom used to make it. I’ve been searching through all the old cook books, but the recipe evaded me. I need it Right Now. You have saved me! Thanks so much! M.

Mmmmm, I love that dessert. Years ago I first started making Betty Crocker’s “pudding cake”. Then they stopped making it and I found the recipe again on the internet. With some ice cream, it is so good.

Making fudge cake while listening to the Parenthetical Girls and Karl Blau?!? Lovely. Plus I accidentally dumped in a whole cup of milk, so I had to make a double recipe…. darn;-)

A little history. This recipe was invented during the great depression and became very popular during wwII when eggs sugar and butter was rationed.
It is popular because it tastes so great and had no eggs, little sugar (mostly brown) and little butter.
Part of it’s popularity today is because for such a rich and indulgent dessert is has less fat and calories then you would expect. That is also why so many commenter’s remember parents and grandparents making this cake. Happy baking everyone.
