Learning to do some bookbinding is still on my to-do list, but for some reason it doesn’t seem to be getting any closer to the top of that list. For quite awhile I have had wild plans to start making my own fancy journals with all kinds of lovely paper inside. Not that I keep a journal, but maybe if I made myself a pretty one I would be inspired to start.
Despite my lack of progress in realizing this goal, I still like looking at nice pictures of other people making books, so that in the event that I find time to do it, I will already be an expert. Here’s some tutorials that I’ve been taking note of:
Tutorial on binding your magazines into a book

Simple Japanese Bookbinding Tutorial

San Diego Museum of Art Lesson Plans for Artistic Books

I also have a nice book called The Art and Craft of Handmade Books that I love to flip through.
Other books about making books that look good: The complete book of bookbinding and The craft of bookbinding

Take a look at “How To Make A Journal Of Your Life” by D Price. You can buy it through Amazon or at your local book store. I totally changed the way I journal after reading this book.

I just got a new book the other day that I think you’d enjoy. It combines bookbinding with sewing and fabric. “Fabric Art Journals – Making, Sewing, and Embellishing Journals from Cloth and Fibers” by Pam Sussman, Quarry Books. It has all sorts of delightful fabric books that I can’t wait to try out. Thanx for the links.

hey – i taught myself to make books a bunch of years ago and i’ve been selling them at the farmer’s market in our town for three years now. one of the best, easiest books to learn from is ‘cover to cover’ by shereen laplantz. it’s well worth the purcahse – enjoy! (p.s. buying colorful waxed linen and gorgeous paper is as fun as yarn)

hi, your site is great. thanks for all of the links too! well, somehow i have aquired a lot of thimbles from various time periods, different styles, etc. I am an mixed media artist and i have a lot of “interesting stuff”, i see the potential in everything, makes for interesting collections. I am tryng to think of ways to use the thimbles in art work. my favorite thing is to make presents for friends. i thought i could make little boxes, maybe collage etc. ring and jewelry boxes and put the thimble inside with a saying or poem or something. My question is i can’t find any good poems or positive sayings about thimbles to sort of use as a springboard for the idea. Does anyone have thoughts on this???thanks!!
