What we lack in timeliness, we make up for with enthusiasm. My sister really wanted to make some pysanky eggs this weekend since we were all together, even though it was a week after easter. We had made them once before, and I guess she wanted to add to the collection for next year. Pysanky is the ukranian art of egg decorating, using wax to draw intricate designs as the eggs are dipped in different layers of dye. The concept is pretty simple, but drawing the designs can be tricky, even when attempting much simpler patterns than the traditional ones. I think we’re improving every year though, maybe by the time I’m 100 I’ll be a master….

This is the site where we got most of the inspiration for designs, and seemed to be one of the few places with more modern or simple designs. I also liked looking at the ukranian stamp designs.. This site also has some general resources on pysanky.

not sure when you made them, but you might not have been late with Orthodox Easter – celebrated later than the other one – it was this past weekend! Your eggs look lovely and would look fantastic all in one basket!

Those are amazing! I might have the patience to do one or two pretty ones, but I’d never be able to so many beautiful eggs. Nice activity.

Oh! I used to make those all the time as a child! My favorite part was melting off oaa the wax and seeing the gorgeous bright colors showing though. I need to go dig out my old pysanky kit.
