I am heading off today to BC, to visit with family and to conduct some research for my major paper at school (only four months to go! yikes!). So I won't be posting regularly for the next week, but may pop my head in to say hi when I get a spare moment or two.
I get a lot of requests for recommendation for good places to visit, both in Toronto and Vancouver, so I thought it would be good to put together a list on the site. I'll do this for Toronto when I get back, but for now, here are the places I'm looking forward to seeing in Vancouver:
Dressew (see my post here), 337 W Hastings
button button, 422 w cordova
Front & Co, 3772 Main St
Regional Assembley of Text 3934 Main St
Smoking Lily, 3634 Main St
Urban Source 3126 Main St
Zulu Records (unrelated to crafting, but I swear it's the most amazing record store on the planet), 1974 W 4th
Other good places in Vancouver:
The Birkeland Bros. Wool Ltd, 3573 Main St.
Textile Clearance Warehouse, 5550 Fraser St
boutiques and vintage stores all along main, like Burqu's Angels, the Barefoot Contessa, eugene choo, motherland, my orange bag.
paper ya Net Loft, Granville Island
ming wo, various locations
Willox Graphic Supplies, 3104 South East Marine Drive
I’m Impressed, 1494 Carwright St., Granville Island
Punjabi Market area around Main and 50th, for many southeast asian fabric stores
Beadmania Beads, 1011 Commercial Dr.
Beadworks, Net Loft, Granville Island
Douglas Trading Post, 991 Granville St
Fabricland, 1678 South East Marine Dr
Loomis, 1629 Main St
Maiwa, Net Loft, Granville Island
Opus, 1360 Johnston St
Another great resource for Vancouver crafty places is the very thorough seamripper's diy guide to Vancouver in Discorder magazine.
Also check out the vancouver modern urban guides for more great places to visit. They're a great resource, I wish there was something like this for toronto too! Another good vancouver resource is the beyond robson blog.
Feel free to add your own recommendations in the comments if you are from vancouver!

Thanks for the great list! I’m printing it out now for my Vancouver trip later the year. A Toronto list would be terrific too if you ever get around to it.
It’s on my list of cities to visit. Hope you have lots of fun on your trip! (Hope the research is interesting too.)

Addition to list: Reddog on Main Street is pretty interesting! I like their little vials and bottles!

The owner of Barefoot Contessa recently opened a second boutique on West Broadway called Lisette, which is beautiful and follows a slightly different aesthetic.
And for another fun boutique that stocks local Van. designers and those beyond, there’s Miss Coquette on West 10th.

doh! i feel so bad that i missed this post because i have tons of recommendations, including the casa gelato close to my dear strathcona ‘hood that has over a hundred gelato flavours. and the foundation for a great dinner & beers!
definitely check out eugene choo, barefoot contessa, the reginal assembly of text, my orange bag, the block, dream, and the commercial drive neighbourhood.

Country Beads – 4th and Maple (better prices than the bead store in granville island).
I ditto Casa Gelato (Venables Street by Clark).
Best sandwiches: Grotto de Fromagio just south of 1st at Commercial Drive.
Best deli: Santa Barbara (north of 1st and Commercial)
Hope you had fun!

Wow – thanks for this amazing list…I’m moving from New York to Vancouver in 1 month, and I’d been planning on setting out on foot to find such cool places, now I’ll have some of the work done for me!

Oohhh.. this list makes me so homesick! I lived in Mount Pleasant until I forsook it for Edinburgh last summer. Not entirely sure I traded up. Actually, I know I didn’t. Sigh.

There’s an awesome ice cream shop with 218 flavors, unfortunately I don’t have the address.
I sprained my ankle and one of my teammates (I went there to dance) ran in and got a double-scoop for me, just requested the strangest combination I could think of….. wasabi and chocolate chip do taste good together, the wasabi isn’t hot at all, but isn’t very sweet either, providing a nice balance to the sweetness of the chocolate.

I enjoyed my trip to Vancouver in large part thanks to Mirabilis’ list of what to do in Vancouver –found at http://www.mirabilis.ca/vancouver/
While my May vacation to Vancouver this year has been post-poned, I do plan on saving your list, as well. It’s a marvelous city and I loved EVERY minute! Thank you for the suggestions.
