My parents have been trying to grow figs for years (they have a huge fig tree in a planter) but the Canadian climate is just not hot enough (not even this hot summer) to make the tree produce succulent and fragrant figs. The best they usually get is a few small figs with zero taste. Unfortunately they are just not as delicious as their European counterparts. Good luck!

Chicken wire for Toronto squirrels??? Naw, you need heavy duty electric orange snow fencing wrapped at least 7 layers deep . Oops, now no sun will get through. Them varmits are agonna be gittin’ in no matters what ya’ll do. (Whre the hell did that accent come from –I have a perfectly good southern Ontario accent thank you very much) All be the best of luck I have no suggestions –my dad used to sit in our Etobicoke backyard with a BB gun thinking he could actually hit the tiny little rodents , never did , but he felt better to be doing something to combat the scourge.

Too funny! and sadly true, those things are a menace. So I agree, between the weather and the squirrels, the prospect for bountiful fig harvest is not good. I’d settle for just a couple! I’ll hold out hope for next year…..even if they don’t taste very good, it still seems cool to me.

We have a fig tree, too, for the last 5 years! But I doubt we ever get to harvest anything, it’s too cold here… I just liked the idea of having a fig tree…

Squirrel menace is very annoying! They have eaten all my strawberries. Try keeping the fig plant inside a cage. It may help. Good Luck.
