Archives for Photos
Daily photos from this month. Obligatory cute baby in costume photo, a little sewing, and fall colours. Here are a few of my favorites.
I am more than halfway through my 365 photo project for this year. I have found it easier to keep up the past few months, being on maternity leave and now that Oscar is a bit older and out of that all consuming newborn phase. I have been using the VSCO camera filters, which I find much nicer than the instagram ones, and the Project 365 app on our ipad to keep organized. I take all my photos on my android phone so this is an extra step - waiting impatiently for both to develop android apps, because there is nothing of similar quality and functionality that I have been able to find available on android. So frustrating! Anyways, this month there is a lot of Oscar putting things in his mouth and learning new things like jumping and sitting, and we tried to get outside a lot too and enjoy the beautiful fall weather.
One of the coolest things we saw in Denmark was this amazing hidden gem of a vintage shop that my sister in law took us to. It was in a tiny small town on the west coast, in the owner's backyard garage. It is usually open only on weekends but my sister-in-law made a special arrangement for us to visit, and what a treat! The whole garage is packed floor to ceiling with vintage scandanavian designed lamps, linens, dishes, rugs, so many things that I couldn't even take it all in. I wished that I had brought a whole empty suitcase with me! I had to content myself with a few select purchases (that I'll show you soon). One of the things I was most drawn to wasn't actually Scandanavian, but was this collection of Kathie Winkle ceramics. I actually have several of these patterned plates and didn't know anything about their origins - they are made by the English company Broadhurst, and Kathie Winkle created more than 100 designs for them. Amazingly, all the colours on these are hand painted. I loved looking at all the different patterns he had collected in the shop.
One of our trips this summer was to Denmark for Ian's brother's wedding. Oscar did surprisingly well on the flight, and got over his jet lag quicker than we did! We spent the first few days in Copenhagen - not surprisingly, it's a beautiful city and we had a great time. We ate a lot of good food, drank good beer, walked a lot. We took a boat tour of the harbour (touristy, but surprisingly good) and got a quick overview of all the highlights. There were a lot more things to see than we had time for, hopefully we'll have a chance to visit again.
Once again this year we rented a house in Prince Edward County with two of my sisters and their families. It is such an amazing place to visit, I still can't believe how close it is to the city and how lucky we are to have such a fantastic beach to visit. In addition spending time at the beach, this trip we also stopped at an antique store on a rainy day and visited the Norm Hardie winery where we had tasty woodfired pizza on a patio next to the vineyard. We also had great lunches at Buddha Dog in Picton and at an East Coast themed food truck, where we had an amazing lobster rolls and fried scallops. The weather wasn't great, but we still had a few days on the beach, where the wind was so strong that there were four foot waves. We will be back again next year for sure!
We were in New York a few weekends ago, during a big blizzard. It made getting around a bit harder, but we used the situation to our advantage to get into restaurants that otherwise would have had line ups around the block. A pay-off for hearty Canadians willing to brave a bit of snow for a good meal. Then the next day everything was very pretty and white (and also a lot slushy). A fun trip.
A look back at January - delicious roasted marshmallows and korean tacos, lots of snow, and a few walks when the sun made an appearance - and a new soundtrack for February. As always, all legal, free mp3 downloads in the right hand column. Some good tunes to get us through the February blahs! Check out the Little Wings, they're one of my favorites.
